Why use a gimbal for your DSLR?

There are many different reasons why the professionals use a stabilizing Gimbal for their DSLR cameras.

Someone who wants to take the perfect shots will always have a really difficult time achieving the perfect camera footage without the image shaking and moving indoors, let alone outside with all the different types for weather Mother Earth throws at us.

Even the most seasoned professional with struggle to keep the camera still without a stabilizer.

Cameramen and Photographers use stabilizers or Gimbals to record the perfect images to ensure the footage is crystal clear and blemish free.

Nobody wants to watch any kind of video that is bouncing about, making you feel nauseous.

The devices work on the same principle of gravity. The Gimbal stabilizes the camera at the center of the chassis, totally wiping out any unwanted moves and jolts.

There are a number of different modes that keep the camera from changing its position and keeping it focused on the task in hand.

The cameraman can literally move as much as they like, the stabilizer will keep the DSLR camera still and pointing on the action you wish to capture.

Electric vs Mechanical gimbals

A Mechanical Gimbal is a support for a camera that allows the rotation on a single axis.

The weight of the camera will help stabilize the camera to be level at all times.

Generally, Mechanical Gimbals have only one or two axis.

Electric Gimbals normally have 3 axis used to stabilize the the camera independant of any movements of camera shakes of the operator.

Motorized Gimbals are extremely popular in extreme sports where there is a lot of intense movement and shaking.

Gimbals nowadays can be attached to all kinds of equipment such as a helmet of a bicycle frame to record the footage smoothly of the user while in action.

Electric Gimbals are operated by brushless motors, these motors keep the camera stable and level on all the different axes it moves on, with extremely rapid response times.

The IMU or Inertial Measurement Unit helps power the micro controller that responds to the camera’s movements, which in turn, utilizers the brushless motors to hold the camera steady.

I possess an ALPHA SONY 7R II on which I adapt an objective SIGMA 12-24 EX or a TAMRON 28-300 Tamron 28-300mm F / 3.5-6.3 Di VC.

Which would be Gimbal the most adapted for these two configurations?

    Thank you very much.

    • topgimbals says:

The A7R II is 625 g / 1.4 lbs, + the Tamron (540g) = 1165g or 2.6 lbs, too heavy for lighter models. The Ikan EC1 Would be the best choice

      • Jason Rea says:

I have the Ikan EC1 and it can hold the higher weight without any issues at all. It is designed for the heavier DSLR cameras. Probably the best stabilizer I have used to be honest.

  • Fabian says:

Iv just purchased a Sony a6000 and I’m
Looking for handheld stabiliser/gimble to suit? Can you recommend one?

  • Sabreen says:

    I have Sony a6300
Which one is best gimbal for me: Zhiyun Crane 3 Axial or Pilotfly H2?
    Thank you

    • Sabreen says:

Also I want ask Which one is easier & faster to balance?

      • topgimbals says:

Hi Sabreen, The H2 is more expensive than the zhiyun crane, it is a bit more sturdy and brings built in 360 time lapse to the table.
It has a lot more battery life, and also has a slightly higher payload, but this should not concern you for the A6000.
Now The Zhiyun crane may also add a time lapse function to their app, not sure if this is available yet or in the near future. It is a bit lighter, and less expensive. I really liked the zhiyun crane overall, but if you need a big 26 hours battery life, and think to upgrade later-on to a bigger dslr, you can consider the H2 as well.
