Feiyu G5 Review: 3 Axis Gimbal for Gopro Hero 5 (PROS & CONS)

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Here we are having a look at the “Splash-proof” Feiyu G5 3-Axis handheld gimbal designed primarily to be the best gimbal for GoPro HERO5, although it is compatible for other GoPro cameras such as the HERO3/3+ and HERO4 versions.

As with all Feiyu products including their gimbals, you can be assured that you are going to get, not only a good looking product, but something that is really easy to operate as they normally put the user at the forefront of the product design.

Feiyu G5 with a tripod

The Feiyu G5 is no different in this respect and the first thing we noticed are the big 3 buttons on the handle, obviously added for easier operation.

Real life use

The main button at the top is a little joystick, allowing easy camera and gimbal movements and the function button allows you to switch between modes, literally within seconds.

Everything about the Feiyu G5 screams quality – from the functions and features to its awesome design and look.

You can tell that Feiyu have put a lot of thought into the G5.

The gimbal has a nice grip section on the lower end of the handle, essential if you are going to film around water. Yes the device is waterproof, but you wouldn’t want to be dropping it in the ocean and losing it forever.

Feiyu have stated that the G5 has all the latest technology with a new Unibody arm motor that counteracts you HERO5 camera and other conjunctional parts, delivering a better, still camera footage.

You can really see the difference in the upgrade as sometimes with earlier models you would see slight vibrations from the motor when changing modes.

The Feiyutech G5 seems to have resolved this, although or only little niggle is that sometimes you can hear the motor in your videos, although this is only a little and we was filming where it was completely silent.

Features review

There are many useful additions to the FEIYU G5 that make it a must buy for those looking to shoot videos around water or snow. There are options to connect the gimbal to extension poles, boat mast or anything else you would like to hook it up to.

The touchscreen allows you to easily delete or edit your footage while you are on the go.

Whilst there is even a “hands free” setting where you can control different settings such as starting or stopping the video and selecting which video you wish to see by voice command!

If you want to control the gimbal from your smartphone, that is also a piece of cake, simply download the app to your phone and tablet and follow the instructions.

The application is one of the best we have used, it is easy to read and super easy to navigate round, we give them an A+ for the app. For all the great features the Feiyu tech G5 gopro gimbal has, it delivers for its primary use – clear, steady, motionless footage in wet conditions.

You can even tell before you get the gimbal wet that water will not be an issue as it is completely “rubberized” in a thick grey outer shell, making it look almost amphibic.

Is it the best Gimbal for Gopro Hero 5 cameras ?

Overall the Feiyu G5 3-Axis gimbal is an awesome bit of kit that will not only enhance your video quality tenfold, but if you are planning to go on a skiing trip or somewhere by the beach then this gimbal becomes a must have.

It has an awesome battery life over around 8 hours and is extremely easy to setup. With Feiyu, you can normally be pretty confident that their technical equipment is going to be spot on and the G5 is exactly that.

It does everything that you would expect it to do – and more. The add-ons such as Unibody arm, really steady’s your GoPro more than the earlier models and you can really see a difference in the final video.

So I bought the G5 for the removable batteries (I shot trekking vlog videos, with limited access to electricity for days).
Feiyu did not disappoint, but it was hard to setup.

When I received the gimbal (nice packaging by the way), it did not immediately work with my gopro, so I had to do a firmware update and then everything was fine.

The results are incredible, it just makes my video so much better, i don’t regret the investment.

Only one thing, the motor noises are definitely a problem. For me it’s fine because I rarely use the mic, and when I do want to record sound I have an external mic. but if you want to use the hero 5 microphone you better know that it won’t be nice in combination with feiyu’s G5..

Thanks for your review, Yes feiyu still has motor noises problems. It was worse with the G4 and in our opinion it is minor here. We also suppose that most people who invest in a gopro stabilizer like the G5 will also purchase an external mic if they need to record sound.

    Hey,

    Thanks for the review,

Can i use a venture filter with my hero 3+ with this gimbal ?

    1. topgimbals says

      Should not be a problem

  3. Matt says

hello, can i use my bacpac LCD with my hero 3 with this gimbal ?

    Thanks

I saw on youtubes, if you are not using it for sport or any fast actions. u can just put a tape or rubber band to hold your gopro as the bacpac will not fit if u use the metal clip.

Hi, I just bought this gimbal for my GoPro Hero 5. Do you have a tip to help me to reduce motor noise ?

    1. topgimbals says

Nothing you can do, but if you intend to record audio with your GoPro videos, I strongly suggest you look into external mic options

    Hi,

I have a Gopro Hero 4 silver, can I use my waterproof case with this gimbal? I like to film by the sea so I’d like to protect my gopro!

    Thanks

    Hello,

I also bought the G5 and use it with the gopro Hero 5, i’m only a bit disappointed in the filming results. Al lot of jitter and bumping. Tried it with and without the image stabilization in the gopro 5 (shot in 2.7k 60fps lineair mode with protone on).

Does anyone have tips in setting the G5 with the iPhone app for best

    Thanks in advance.

    Greetings Ben.

    Hello, guys,
I downloaded the Firmware Upgrading software for my Gimbal G5 and since then I have been getting a flashing blue light on the unit. My gimbal was working beautifully before I upgraded the firmware. I already tried hooking up to my desktop computer and I haven’t been successful after trying for over an hour or so. Any advice I can get from you to reset the Gimbal G5 to its factory status?
    Thanks!

hi, is it well compatible with RX100m5A ? thanks.

It’s so bad. All my videos are ruined. Because of the noise coming out from it. That’s some money gone waste for a really bad product. And I cant find a solution for it.
