Top Gimbals for GoPro Hero 8

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you’re looking for top gimbals for GoPro Hero 8, you’ve come to the right place!

GoPros make excellent video cameras, but it goes without saying that they are also built to record action. Whether you are filming extreme sports or daily blogs, the new GoPro Hero 8 is an excellent choice, considering its portability and amazing video quality.

When you’re recording action, however, camera shake will almost always be an issue. Even with the “HyperSmooth” electronic image stabilization technology in GoPro Hero 8, tackling camera movement with only software has its limitations.

This is where a 3-axis GoPro gimbal stabilizer comes in handy. It’s the ultimate accessory that will help you record smoother footage.

However, choosing the right gimbal for your GoPro Hero 8 can be challenging, as there are tons of different gimbal stabilizers available out there. With that in mind, here are the X top gimbals for GoPro Hero 8 that I highly recommend, offering premium features at reasonable costs.

Limitations: GoPro 8’s biggest flaw – New Form Factor

Due to GoPro changing the physical footprint of the GoPro Hero 8, many of the old gimabls we typically would recommend are not 100% compatible. I have listed them lower down in the article, because they can be adapted with adapter plates and some home jerry rigging with rubber bands. However if your looking for an out of the box experience, here are the only gimbals i know of that can be considered compatible. They achieve this by being generic in the dimensions they accept. So while some manufacturers claim compatibility, the Zhiyun Crane M2 is your safest bet, and the one that I would recommend.

1. Zhiyun Crane M2 (Amazon)– This is a generic gimbal that is multipurpose. The motors are very powerful. Keep in mind that you will need to spend some time balancing the gimbal yourself. While not a deal breaker, it is an extra step.

Below are the recommendations for the DIY crowed 🙂

#1. Feiyu WG2X — Best Wearable GoPro Gimbal

Feiyu-WG2X

Another product on our list of top gimbals for GoPro Hero 8 is the (Amazon) Feiyu WG2X Splash-proof 3-Axis Wearable Gimbal, which is the successor of the famous WG2 gimbal.

They may look similar on the surface, but the WG2X offers improved stabilization and an angled stabilizer arm, with remote-control ability.

The gimbal is boasting a compact design, making it easily worn with shoulder straps or chest harnesses. You can also seamlessly attach it to selfie sticks, desktop tripods, and handlebars— all of which fit the gimbal’s universal 1/4 inch thread needle.

The WG2X gimbal features 3 shooting modes that include:

  • Pan follow
  • Following
  • Locked

As opposed to other wearable gimbal stabilizers like the Hohem XG1 or Zhiyun Rider-M, WG2X offers an unlimited motion range in its tilt and pan axes.

On top of that, the ON App by Feiyu lets you control the gimbal using your smartphone remotely. This feature is immensely useful for wearable GoPro gimbals that are hard to access, especially when worn.

The only concern I had with the gimbal is the 1500mAh battery. However, considering its compact shape, this is the best you can get when it comes to wearable gimbals.

Specs:

  • Dimension: 3.54 x 4.06″ / 9 x 10.3 cm
  • Weigh: 0.52 lb / 238 g
  • Max Payload: 0.298lb/135g(In balanced status)
  • Rotation Angle: Tilt: 360°; Roll: 310°(Structure range), 70° (Limit angle after camera mounted); Pan: 360°.
  • Battery: Lithium-ion 1500mAh; 3.7V/p>
  • Working Time: 2.5h (with Wi-Fi function on)
  • Charging Time: 2h (using a 5V/2A charger)
  • Manual lock: Yes
  • Reset/ Initialization: Yes
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatibility: Yes

Package Includes:

  • Feiyu WG2X Gimbal *1
  • USB Cable *1
  • Session mounting platel *1
  • Short screw *2
  • Long screw *2
  • 1/4 inch T-head connector *1
  • EPP bag *1

#2. Removu S1 — Best 2-in-1 GoPro Gimbal

Removu-S1

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a handheld+wearable gimbal combination, look no further than the (Amazon) Removu S1 3-Axis Wireless Remote Control Gimbal

The modular design of the gimbal indicates you can detach the grip, making a wearable solution that you can mount anywhere. Note that you need to buy a Hero 8 mount plate separately for the gimbal to better support your action camera.

That said, Removu is a popular GoPro accessory brand. They have done some next-level engineering in the Removu S1. For instance, the rainproof modular design makes the S1 a versatile product.

By detaching its handgrip, you can mount the S1 anywhere. In fact, the handgrip itself has a removable Bluetooth remote control, meaning you can control the S1 remotely even if it’s mounted to your chest or on your helmet.

While one can argue about GoPro Karma Grip offering smoother footage, it isn’t a true 2-in-1 gimbal as the battery is housed inside the grip.

The Removu S1 is one of the top gimbals for GoPro Hero 8 that won’t break your bank. It boasts a classy design and small features like detachable remote control and removable battery are simply cherry on top.

Key Features:

  • Rotary Sensors, Brushless Motors
  • Rain-proof
  • 5-Way joystick Remote Control
  • Mountable Gimbal/Detachable Handle
  • 292° of pan and tilt; 90° of roll
  • The smart battery charger can be used to simultaneously charge 2 batteries and wireless remote control

#3. iSteady Pro 2 — Best Handheld GoPro Gimbal

iSteady-Pro-2

The (Amazon) Hohem iSteady Pro 2 is one of the top gimbals for GoPro Hero 8 you can buy today. This is something i am adding to the list lightly, as general GoPro compatibility is low across the market. With some simple workarounds such as a Velcro strap or rubber band it works fine. Its a shame there is no adapter as of yet, but with some workarounds it can work. Not ideal, but since the iSteady is such a good gimbal I thought i would include it here.

It’s a solid choice for those looking to get rid of camera shake. This splash-proof gimbal is not only compatible with Hero 8 but also its predecessors, i.e., Hero 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and other similar-sized action cameras.

Despite its affordable price, the gimbal boasts a plethora of features. With 4 shooting modes, 12 hours battery life, and 600-degree motion range in its pan axis, the iSteady Pro 2 offers everything you expect from a gimbal.

It’s compact but packs in several useful controls for capturing cinematic footage, including one nifty joystick to adjust the tilt and pan electronically. Besides the typical standard buttons, you also get programmable hotkeys that you can set using the Hohem App.

The new angled gimbal arm provides 30% torque improvements, ensuring the display of your camera remains unobstructed. Also, there’s a trigger on the back handle, making functions like snapping or locking-on a breeze while filming.

Given its $100 price range, there’s literally no other gimbal that performs nearly as good as the Hohem iSteady Pro 2.

Specs:

  • Material: ABS+PC
  • Weight: 351g (with battery)
  • Payload: 150g
  • Working Time: 12h
  • Charging Time: 3.5h
  • Working temperature: -10~45℃
  • Beveled angle design: 30
  • Mechanical Range: Panning: 600°, Rolling: 320°, Tilting 320°
  • Water splash-proof: Yes

App Features:

  • Motion timelapse
  • Working Modes Change
  • Virtual Remote Controller
  • 6-side Calibration
  • Personal Specs Setting
  • Re-center
  • Online Firmware Upgrade

  • iSteady Pro 2 Gimbal *1

I’ve recently purchased the GoPro Hero 8 and have been looking at many different gimbals. So far all the comments and reviews I have seen have indicated that as the Hero 8 is slightly larger than its predecessors and it is in fact not compatible with any gimbals on the current market. The exception being a larger mount/adaptor that can be purchased separately (which I should add is all also incredibly difficult to find!). Can you confirm that you have successfully mounted the Hero 8 onto the gimbals mentioned above? More specifically the isteady pro 2?

You are right, initally when I wrote this it was said there would be an adapter made and included with the iSteady. That seemed to not materialize. I will change this article once I find and test a suitable replacement. thanks Alex

The website for the isteady pro 2 says that it is not compatible with the Hero 8. Am I missing something? Doesn’t appear to be that many that will work with the 8 black at this point.

    1. Josh Kruger says

You are correct, i have now made it 3rd in the list, as it does with with some small modifications but not out of the box. I also noted that. Thanks so much for the comment!

  3. Scott McWilliam says

Rudy, how about a fact check on the WG2x by Feiyutech because it looks like you read the sale material from the manufacturer and did not test the unit. The Hero 8 Black does not fit in this gimbal, They do make extra parts that you can waste your time installing only to discover that you cannot balance the camera on the gimbal. It is a poorly designed non-started. You cannot operate the camera power button on the camera when it is in the gimbal. Mines on the way back tomorrow. Don’t waste your time with this junk.

Hey Scott, i am re looking into this right now and will reupdate the article to reflect the new changes. Thank you so much for your post, I really appreciate it!
